Why the Boat Chair? We are located in Downeast Maine in the heart of traditional boat making and Geoff wanted to honor that tradition.
The Boat Chair is designed and crafted with laminated slats and steam bent frames and held together with copper rivets, just like traditional small boat construction. The steam bent frames can be either walnut or cherry and the laminated slats for the back and seat are ash. The copper rivets add a beautiful detail along with their practical function.
Geoff begins with a full scale drawing of the design, making sure he has the correct ergonomic proportions. He then uses several design tools to create the jigs to enable him to make the first mock up of the chair. After he has created the mock up and tweaked any angles that he wants to change then it is ready for production. This entire process takes a lot of time from an idea to the finished product.
The chair is now on our website and in the studio to try. Besides availability in cherry or walnut it also has an armchair and an armless version. We often have customers that would like the armed version at the ends of a dining table and an armless side chair that matches. The Boat Chair makes a great dining chair (Geoff can also design and craft a beautiful dining table, too). But is also makes a great accent chair for living room or bedroom (or any other space).
Please watch our youtube video to watch Geoff describe the process. It’s riveting!
